Exploring Cambodia: The Best Time for Adventure Travel

Streams, rivers and waterfalls in green season Cambodia

One of the questions we get asked all the time is: “When’s the best time to visit Cambodia?” And while the easy answer is “any time you can,” there’s more to it than just picking the driest month.

Whether you’re here for ancient temples, jungle hikes, or island time, there are real perks to every part of the year. So if you’re wondering when to plan your trip, here’s our guide to exploring Cambodia: the best time for adventure travel—including why we love the green season.

Dry Season: November to April

This is when Cambodia sees the most sunshine and the clearest skies. It’s hot (especially from March onward), but also ideal for beach days, long motorbike rides, and getting deep into the temple zones without worrying about weather.

What it’s great for:

  • Sunrise at Angkor Wat (with a few thousand new friends)

  • Island-hopping and snorkeling in calm waters

  • Long-distance travel—roads are dry and easy

  • National park hikes and remote villages

This is also peak tourist season, so some spots get busy. If you’re heading to popular areas like Siem Reap or the islands, we recommend booking early.

Green Season: May to October

Ah yes—the green season. Not “rainy season,” not “low season.” Green season is when Cambodia comes alive. The rice fields glow neon green, the jungle thickens up, and waterfalls roar back to life. Yes, there’s rain—but usually in short, dramatic bursts in the late afternoon or evening, and it cools everything down in the best way.

Why we love it:

  • Fewer crowds, more connection

  • Lower prices on accommodation and tours

  • Epic cloudscapes and dramatic sunsets

  • Water-based adventures are at their best—think flooded forests, boat tours, and kayaking

In places like Kampot or Mondulkiri, the landscape is next-level during green season. Plus, there’s something magical about floating through a misty village on the Tonlé Sap or watching the jungle steam as the rain clears.

Our guides say it best: “If you don’t mind getting a little wet, you’ll see the real Cambodia.”

Festivals to Plan Around

Cambodia’s calendar is dotted with celebrations worth syncing your adventure with. A few favorites:

  • Khmer New Year (April): A country-wide water fight and party rolled into one.

  • Pchum Ben (September/October): A respectful, spiritual time to observe local customs.

  • Bon Om Touk (November): Cambodia’s legendary Water Festival, full of boat races and riverside energy.

Ask us what’s happening during your dates—we’re always in the loop!

So, when is the best time for adventure travel in Cambodia?

Honestly—it depends on what kind of traveler you are. Love the heat, blue skies, and buzzing energy? Dry season’s your jam. Want lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and some real off-the-beaten-path magic? The green season’s calling your name.

And the best part? Cambodia’s welcoming vibe is here year-round.
