Navigating Cambodia: Transportation Tips for Adventurers

Long tail taxi boat Cambodia

One of the most exciting (and let’s be honest—chaotic) parts of travel in Cambodia is getting around. Tuk tuks weaving through traffic, ferries skimming over turquoise water, scooters buzzing through sleepy towns… it’s all part of the adventure.

If you’re wondering how to get from temple to beach to jungle and back again, we’ve got your back. Here are our top tips for navigating Cambodia: transportation tips for adventurers who want to explore the Kingdom the local way.

1. Tuk Tuks Are the MVPs of the Road

In every city and town, tuk tuks are your best friend. They’re cheap, easy to find, and a ride through town is a whole experience in itself. You can hail them on the street or use apps like Grab or PassApp in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap to get a fixed price.

Tip: Always agree on the price before you hop in (unless you're using the app), and bring small change to avoid awkward money moments.

2. Scooters = Freedom (But Only If You Know What You’re Doing)

Renting a scooter gives you serious freedom, especially in places like Kampot, the islands, or the countryside around Battambang. But Cambodia’s roads aren’t always the smoothest, and traffic has its own rules (or lack thereof).

If you’re confident on two wheels, it’s an awesome way to explore. If not, consider hiring a driver for the day instead—it’s safer and still super affordable.

Bonus: our guides can hook you up with trusted rentals and safety tips in each location.

3. Buses & Minivans for Longer Distances

Traveling between cities? Cambodia has a network of local and tourist buses and minivans that are budget-friendly and easy to book. They range from super basic to pretty comfy, and the scenery out the window is always worth a look.

Minivans are faster (but bumpier), while larger buses offer a smoother ride. Book through your guesthouse or a local travel shop to avoid online overcharges.

Heads-up: always pack some snacks and be ready for “flexible” schedules.

4. Island Hopping by Boat

If you're heading to Koh Rong or Koh Rong Samloem (and you definitely should), you’ll be catching a ferry from Sihanoukville. There are several companies doing the trip daily, but not all boats are created equal.

Tip: Book with a reputable operator or through your accommodation. Fast boats get you there in under an hour, but things can get bumpy—keep your dry bag and sea legs ready!

Also, be prepared for sudden changes in sea conditions. The weather can shift quickly, especially during rainy season.

5. Flights for Time-Savers

While overland travel is part of the charm, sometimes it just makes sense to fly—especially if you’re short on time and want to jump from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap or Siem Reap to Sihanoukville. Domestic flights are quick and usually affordable if you book in advance.

Just make sure you double-check luggage policies and avoid booking super tight connections—things can run on “Cambodia time.”

6. Trains: Slow but Scenic

Cambodia's trains aren’t fast, but they are charming. The Royal Railway line from Phnom Penh to Kampot or Sihanoukville is a chilled-out, scenic way to see the countryside. It’s not ideal if you're in a rush, but if you’ve got time to spare and want a local experience, it’s worth it.

7. Walking and Biking in Small Towns

In places like Kampot, Kep, and even parts of Siem Reap, walking or biking is the best way to soak in the slow life. You’ll stumble across hidden cafes, sleepy rice fields, and friendly locals you’d miss if you were zooming by.

Some guesthouses offer free bikes, or you can rent one super cheap for the day.

However you choose to move through Cambodia, every tuk tuk ride, boat trip, and bumpy bus journey is part of the magic. With a little planning and a good sense of humor, navigating Cambodia becomes one of the most memorable parts of your adventure.
